Module 1 Objectives

In Module 1, you’ll learn how targeted violence is defined, be introduced to the varied landscape of threats this training addresses, and review examples of targeted violence. You will also learn about some recent research which describes who commits targeted violence attacks and how they do it.  You will also have opportunities to learn about specific concepts that shape how we understand targeted violence, such as the public health approach, and different possible steps you can take in your work as a mental health specialist.  

By the end of this module, you will be able to:  

  • Define key terms related to targeted violence and extremism.
  • Recognize the similarities and differences between targeted violence and other forms of violence. 
  • Identify the predictors of violent extremism behavior.
  • Describe the roles of mental health specialists in targeted-violence prevention.
